WGIS Committee seeking new member The Women & Girls in Sailing Committee of Yachting Victoria are seeking an enthusiastic person with skills in areas of website and communications to join our committee. The WGIS committee is dedicated to encouraging more Victorian females to participate in sailing, whether it is in keelboats, dinghies, catamarans, powerboats, officiating or any other role. As a sub-committee of Yachting Victoria we have made significant progress in promoting and raising the profile of women and girls in sailing and we now need assistance to share what is happening in yacht clubs across all forms of media to build interest and engagement in our sport. Aim for the Stars Grants Sourced from the Funding Centre Scoop newsletter and the provider is the Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation. The funding amount is: $4,000 (for individuals) or $6,000 (for groups). The grant application process closes on the 14th November 2014. This Foundation is all about empowering and enabling individuals to take control of their lives, to invest in their future and fulfil their potential. WOMEN & GIRLS IN SAILING INITIATIVES
Women and Girls in Sailing Local Club Heroes Initiative: A local hero, in this initiative, is someone who encourages and supports the involvement of women and girls in sailing. Heroes can be dinghy sailors, keelboat sailors, Race Officers, club Commodores or flag officers, women out on the water pulling flags and helping run the races. In this newsletter we are featuring Tamara Ford from Parkdale Yacht Club. Read about Tamara’s experience volunteering for Parkdale Yacht Club and other local heroes.
Women and Girls in Sailing Club Representative (WGIS CR) The role of WGIS CR is open to either men or women and is somebody who works to positively promote female friendliness at your club. We hope your club will nominate a member to the WGIS Club Representative role. The nominated person should be passionate about sailing, a good communicator and will act as the initial contact point for prospective and existing female sailors. If you are interested in the role or want more information please contact me at email@example.com. Currently there are 35 yacht clubs in Victoria with WGIS CRs.
Sarah Blanck Perpetual Trophy Regatta There is now over 30 Laser and Sabre sailors registered for the Sarah Blanck All-Female regatta to be held on November 8 and 9 at Westernport Yacht Club.
Girl's School Sailing Series The first round of the 2014/15 Girl’s School Sailing series was held last night at SYC. This saw four schools and 26 students compete in a round of sprint sailing to gain points for the Krystal Weir Trophy. The Krystal Weir Trophy is the peak award for Girl's School Sailing and is awarded at the OTB Marine Yachting Victoria awards night in June.Click here for more information on Girls school sailing events.
Discover Sailing Day The national Discover Sailing Day is coming up on the 26th October. We are asking you to bring one of your friends down to a participating club and take them sailing. www.discoversailing.org.au
Women and Girls in Sailing Developing Future Female Leaders Yachting Victoria will continue to run leadership courses for adults after the success from autumn. Yachting Victoria can confirm the next course will be on Sunday 12th October at The Boatshed (3 Aquatic Dr, Albert Park). The cost is $125. Women and Girls in Sailing Youth Leadership Day Yachting Victoria plan to have a youth girl leadership day on the 25th October at the Boatshed at Albert Park. The aim is to assist youth girls to further develop their own leadership skills and become leaders within the sailing community and at their club. To read more about the day.
